A taste of the 27th Shetland Folk Festival

The following clips were all filmed by Norman Strachan Video Limited for use by the Shetland Folk Festival Society. Thank you Norman!

Most of the filming took place during the Shetland Folk Festival Clickimin Foy on the evening of May 6th. These Foy concerts are unique to Shetland and give audiences an opportunity of seeing all visting artistes in one evening. Held over three venues in Lerwick, the acts are shuffled between halls by mini bus and perform in each venue for around 15 minutes with no opportunity to sound check. It’s crazy but it works!

Here are just some of the acts that appeared in the 2007 lineup:

Lazy Boy Chair (aka. The Chair)

From our neighbouring islands to the south, this Orkney band are an absolute riot.....we love 'em!

Crooked Still

Hailing from Boston, USA, this hot young alternative bluegrass group are on a mission to bend the boundaries of traditional music. One of the big hits of the 27th Festival.

And here they are again with Little Sadie...

Troy MacGillivray

From Antigonish, Nova Scotia (i.e. not Cape Breton!) we have Troy MacGillivray on Fiddle, Buddy MacDonald on Guitar, Brent Chiasson on drums and Allan Dewar on Piano. What a treat!

Bodega

The members of this band met at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in 2004, formed Bodega in 2005 and then went on to win the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards in 2006. They feature Shetland’s very own Ross Couper on fiddle.

Sharon Shannon, Gerry O’Conner & Jim Murray

All leading Irish Musicians, this line up was a huge hit with Shetland Folk Festival goers. Gerry also appeared with Four Men and a Dog who played the Clickimin on Friday 4th.

Ray Bonneville

Filmed at the Sunday afternoon Singing Concert, Bonneville "cooks up a deep groove", stirring his own unique percussive electric guitar style, his weathered voice, and soulful rack harmonica lines into songs that can be believed.

Terrafolk

This critically acclaimed band from Slovenia were a massive hit at the 27th Shetland Folk Festival. Featured here with special guest - classical violinist Anja Bukovec - Terrafolk like to play a mind boggling assortment of folk styles. Fantastic!

The Toy Hearts

This six-piece Family, Traditional and Contemporary Bluegrass Band from Birmingham (but with Shetland connections) have created and honed their own distinctive bluegrass sound.

Mary Black

A legend in her homeland of Ireland, Mary Black has long held the attention of followers of Irish Music as one of the finest female vocalists in the world. The Shetland Folk Festival committee were delighted to have Mary grace the Festival’s stages....after years of trying to get her here!
