Gordon Gunn, Brian McAlpine & Friends

Gordon Gunn, Brian McAlpine & Friends

Gordon Gunn is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest fiddlers, and attends this year’s festival along with three superbly talented fellow musicians – all four of them are members of Scottish ‘supergroup’ Session A9 who last performed at the Shetland Folk Festival in 2010.

This quartet, along with some guest musicians, recently released the album ‘Wick to Wickham’ to much acclaim. With sets including Gordon’s own compositions, those of other contemporary composers and traditional tunes, together they produce a rich and exciting sound.

Gordon Gunn has been described as "one of the most exciting and innovative fiddle players of the times."   He is also regarded as a talented composer, especially of slow airs which are the envy of all tunesmiths.

As a world class multi-instrumentalist Brian McAlpine (piano) is well known on the Scottish music scene, working with some of the country’s best musicians. He has over 67 albums under his belt, along with extensive live touring and countless radio sessions and television appearances.

Playing guitar with the band will be extremely talented Marc Clement who is no stranger to the Shetland Folk Festival having performed both with Session A9, and also with Adam Sutherland and Friends in 2014.  David Robertson from Edinburgh – better known as Chimp – is a highly experienced percussionist who first began playing for legendary Scottish band Capercaillie in 1996.
