Shooglenifty
This seven-piece band is credited as being the originators of ‘acid-croft’, a fiery and infectious blend of Celtic traditional music and dance grooves that band members describe as “hypno-folkadelic ambient trad”.
Shooglenifty was formed in 1990 by musicians from the Scottish Highlands, Orkney and Edinburgh, its bright spark was the idea of fusing traditional and traditional-sounding melodies with the beats and basslines of more contemporary influences. It’s been nine years since they last appeared at the Shetland Folk Festival (1995 and 2009), where they have acquired a large Shetland fanbase, and since that time they have been all over the world with their unique brand of devilishly irresistible Highland-inspired dance music. They have toured in Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and India, put in a couple of appearances at the Rainforest World Music stage, and headlined numerous festivals in Scotland, England and continental Europe.
In October 2016, the band lost their much-loved fiddler and influential front man Angus R Grant, and last year was all about remembrance, recording and re-grouping. A special tribute gig that they arranged and performed at in January 2017 - A Night for Angus - went on to win the title of Event of the Year at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards that year. This year Shooglenifty will return to live performance with the fantastic fiddle player, Eilidh Shaw, permanently joining the band moving forward.
