Wör

Wör

Wör are an up and coming Flemish five-piece band bringing new energy to old 18th century Belgian tunes through their masterful playing of saxophones, bagpipes, violin, accordion and guitar.

Back to the 1780's! If it sounded good back then, then why not today?  Wör have taken collections of dance tunes from 18th Century Flanders and put together their own finely textured arrangements.  With their enthusiastic and highly competent style, Wör have turned these old favourites into something really quite special. The original robust nature of the material shines through and yet they have still been able to put their own modern twist into their exuberant performances of the material.

Saxophones and accordions hadn't been invented in the 1780s, but these are added to the timeless fiddle, guitar and bagpipes to create a sound which is lively and appealing while clearly close to renaissance music.  The net result is a strangely timeless, contemporary sound that is firmly seated in the past but could still easily have been written today.  This rather epic approach to what is effectively late baroque music wouldn't be out of place on the soundtrack of a show like 'Game of Thrones'!  Wör make going back to the 1780’s an attractive notion.

The band members are: Pieterjan Van Kerckhoven (bagpipes, saxophone), Oscar Beerten  (violin), Bert Ruymbeek (accordion), Jeroen Knapen (guitar) and Fabio Di Meo (baritone saxophone).
