Son Yambu

Son Yambu

Performing red hot rhythms, straight from the streets of Santiago de Cuba, Son Yambu play authentic Cuban son, the essential Afro-Cuban sound that originated in the streets of eastern Cuba and gave rise to modern salsa. Their music is an intoxicating fusion of Spanish and African rhythms but by giving it a contemporary edge, Son Yambu are the perfect addition to any Festival!

Based in London, the band are representative of the burgeoning Cuban music scene in the UK, which has grown in strength ever since Cuban musicians began settling here from the early 1990s. Their debut CD album – “La Maravilla” - has the distinction of being the first Cuban son release ever recorded in the UK and dynamic female lead vocalist Yuri Moreno has been compared to a young Celia Cruz by their record label.

The band members, who all have a lifetime’s experience playing Latin music, both as recording artists and in live performances around the world, come mainly from Santiago de Cuba (the birthplace of son*) and all are passionate about maintaining the traditions of the genre and promoting this original music in the 21st century. They maintain the pure tradition of son’s Oriente roots with their repertoire including specially commissioned original songs from composers still living in the city today.

Appearing in Shetland as a five piece is Yuriselys Moreno Soria on vocals, percussion and guitar, Oscar Vazquez Romero on Bass, Rey Crespo on Guitar, Bass and backing vocals, Rene ‘Menique’ Savigne on percussion and backing vocals and Toby Herschmann on percussion. We’re pretty sure audiences will find an irresistible bite to their songs, which is guaranteed to get us all dancing a bit of salsa!
