Catherine & Sarah Brown

Catherine & Sarah Brown

Being brought up on the Black Isle, Catherine and Sarah have been immersed in a rich culture of traditional music.

They both started playing instruments at the age of eight, having a classical training in school. However, it soon became clear that their passion lay in traditional music. Through participating in the Feisean movement and continued tuition both in school and in the community, they have been and continue to be inspired by the magical world of folk music. And folk musicians! They have both taken part in a number of concerts in their local community and further afield: as individuals and with groups, including the Kiltearn Fiddlers and Gizzenbriggs. Catherine’s ceilidh band ‘Siccarsund’ appeared at the Danny Kyle Open Stage in 2006.

Sarah and Catherine play a mixture of Scottish, Irish, Cape Breton and Shetland tunes, and also enjoy singing. Over the past few years, they have relished composing music and the recent move to Shetland has inspired them further.
