Tunester

Tunester

Tunester was formed in 2008 to provide a platform for talented young musicians to widen their musicianship and performance skills. Based at Anderson High School, the band meets weekly to explore arrangements. The focus is centred on the Traditional and contemporary music of our Islands.

Tunester performs throughout the community supporting the school, local charities and Festivals. Following dynamic and exciting performances we have made cultural links with Ireland, Northumberland and Central Scotland. Last year the band travelled to Londonderry to take part in the first Youth Camp run by the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention. Here they joined with 15 youth groups from around the North Atlantic to perform, learn and share our differing Traditions. Later in the summer they travelled to Edinburgh to play in the Edinburgh Festivals Scottish Fantasia at the Ross Band Stand in Princes Street. This has afforded us the opportunity to promote Shetland’s culture and heritage to new audiences.

Tunester is a showcase for the work done by Dr. Tom Anderson, MBE and the introduction of traditional instruments to the schools instrumental service that developed from his work.
