Tenement Jazz Band

Let the Tenement Jazz Band take you back to the red-hot roots of jazz, ragtime and blues with scorching renditions of early recordings and fresh takes on lesser-known tunes. Powered along by the classic New Orleans front line of trumpet, trombone and saxophones, you're in for a truly swinging set.

The Edinburgh based Tenement Jazz Band proudly claimed the title of ‘Best Band’ at the 2022 Scottish Jazz Awards. Brought together by their shared love of New Orleans music, they are on a journey of exploration back to the roots of the music that they play. Their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the early jazz recordings, to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, to captivate experienced jazzers, dancers, and uninitiated ears alike.

The band have become a regular fixture on the UK touring circuit and further afield, headlining their own shows and accompanying the likes of New Orleans singer Meschiya Lake and stride piano sensation Stephanie Trick.

While their show 'The Red Hot Roots of Jazz' has become a regular sell-out event at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 2024 will see the band touring with their own themed shows.  This includes food-themed show 'Jazz a la Carte', and a new production designed to introduce children to the joy of acoustic instruments and analogue sound production 'Tenement Jazz Band's Cabinet of Musical Wonder'.

The band members are Charles 'Chuck' Dearness (trumpet); Stephen Feast (clarinet, tenor sax), Paddy Darley (trombone), John Youngs (banjo, vocals) and Rory Clark (sousaphone).

They’ve done their homework. They follow tight roadmaps through somewhat familiar tunes with a focus on ensemble over solo. The results are rich and multi-layered…

Syncopated Times

The future of traditional jazz is in good hands

Bert Thompson, MusicWeb-International.com

What better way to spend an afternoon than to descend into the candlelit depths of The Jazz Bar and to fill your ears with sweet jazz syrup from the Tenement Jazz Band? The music was tight, the set list carefully crafted, and the conversation on stage made me feel as if I’d joined them in their own front room. Can’t recommend this show enough!
