Deira

Deira

Deira are are exciting up and coming trio of musicians from Asturias and Andalusia in Spain who were the first ever non-Scottish act to win Celtic Connection’s prestigious “Battle of the Folk Bands” competition.

Deira’s band journey was born in 2019 at the world renowned Lorient Interceltic Festival, where the trio were invited to perform as a resident group in the Asturian tent.

Their first demo (recorded remotely and launched during the pandemic) explored the connections of Asturian and Scottish music from a modern angle.  Once travelling opportunities opened up again, they made the trip to Celtic Connections in 2022 to take part in the Festivals' prestigious platform for championing Scottish traditional music and emerging talent – the Battle of the Folk Bands competition.  They won!

Winning the Battle in 2022 earned them a flurry of subsequent bookings, which has since seen them performing at many of most prestigious folk festivals in Europe, garnering rave reviews along the way.  Their album release Alba in 2023, clearly demonstrates their strong bond with Scottish music.

The band members are Salvador Daza (fiddle), Juan Almaraz (Irish flute) and Gonzalo Llao (bouzouki) and we are absolutely delighted to welcome them to Shetland and the Shetland Folk Festival.
