Shetland's Young Fiddler of the Year 2021 - Magnus Williamson

Shetland's Young Fiddler of the Year 2021 - Magnus Williamson

The Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year brings together many of Shetland’s talented young fiddlers to showcase their music just the weekend before the Shetland Folk Festival. The year, we will be featuring the winner of the 2021 competition (Magnus Williamson) and the winner of the 2022 competition which will be announced on 23rd April.

Contemporary and traditional Shetland tunes are performed by over 100 fiddlers aged six to sixteen before (2022 ) judges Stella Wilkie, Jenna Reid and John Robert Deyell. Three age groups compete for an array of silverware and there is a winner for both the Open and Traditional section in each age group. In the senior age group, the fiddler who performs best in both sections is awarded the prestigious title of Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year. We will feature winners from the 2022 competition at a dedicated fiddle theme concert on the Friday in Mareel

The winner of the 2021 competition, Magnus Williamson from Whalsay, will perform as part of the Saturday concert at Mareel and will be accompanied by Martin Henderson for his concert set.  Magnus has previously appeared at the Festival with Langstrings and that group are bound to appear in a session at this year's daytime Festival club too!
