Duo Ruut

Duo Ruut

Estonian Duo Ruut (Duo Square), comprised of Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi, weaves a unique soundscape by merging two voices with a single Estonian zither. Since coming together in 2017, their minimalist yet imaginative approach has earned them a global following, blending the traditional sounds of Estonian heritage with contemporary, emotive songwriting. Their music, described by MOJO as “a band-sized sound with high-keening, folk-style harmony singing,” captures the essence of folk while exploring fresh ideas and cross-cultural influences.

In a short time, Duo Ruut has graced prestigious stages around the world, from Celtic Connections and Womex to Trans Musicales and Jazzkaar, performing in over 20 countries including Japan, Uzbekistan, and throughout Europe. Their debut album, Tuule sõnad (2019), won “Debut Album of the Year” at the Estonian Ethno Music Awards, and their 2021 EP, Kulla Kerguseks (Golden Light), was nominated for the Estonian Music Awards’ “Ethno/Folk Album of the Year.” International media such as BBCKEXPMOJO, and Songlines have praised their enchanting style and synchronicity, which The List calls “captivating.”

Duo Ruut’s sound is both soothing and stirring, captivating audiences with ethereal harmonies and a zither that serves as both a string and percussion instrument. With collaborations alongside artists like Curly Strings and NOËP, Duo Ruut continues to push the boundaries of folk, creating a transcendent and unforgettable experience.
