Sandra Vabarna (Estonian bagpipes, soprano saxophone, whistle, jews harp, vocals), Jalmar Vabarna (12-string guitar, vocals) and Tõnu Tubli (percussion, vocals) have long been good friends, and have been active on the Estonian music scene for more than fifteen years. When they applied to play at Tallinn Music Week 2014 they didn’t even have a name, they had only five tunes, which was thankfully just enough for the short showcase. After hugely positive feedback from audience and critics they decided to take things more seriously - and Trad Attack was born! Within two years they had played in 26 countries – and they are now making their UK debut at the Shetland Folk Festival. In this time they have also won 14 Estonian Music Awards - including Best Band at the Estonian Ethno Music Awards 2016, plus Best Band and Best Album at the Estonian Music Awards the same year. The band released their first tune, “Kooreke”, which became a hit and it was clear that people liked their unique approach to their music. Trad.Attack! takes inspiration from old archive recordings and contemporary music to create punchy and rousing shows, which will be performed with a more acoustic approach in the smaller festival concerts.
