HUIPPU are a new-generation Nordic folk powerhouse, blending contemporary folk with influences from Nordic and Irish traditions and the melodic sensibility of pop.
Formed in Finland in 2023 by six close friends, the band’s sound is driven by tight grooves, infectious melodies and a light, joyful energy, brought together through strong musical chemistry and a dynamic live presence.
Their debut album Haikankärki (2025) captures this fresh approach and has quickly established HUIPPU as an exciting new force on the Finnish folk scene. Since its release, the band has performed widely across Finland, winning over audiences, dancers and media alike, and were selected for the Showcase programme at the 2025 Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. In January 2026, they were voted newcomer of the year at a prestigious folk awards ceremony in Finland.
The Shetland Folk Festival consistently champions emerging talent and we are thrilled to offer HUIPPU their debut UK performance.
HUIPPU are Touko Kentala on fiddle, Viive Virtanen on 5-string fiddle, Sonja Kola on accordion, Aapo Nieminen on guitar, jaw-harp, Petteri Wiander on double bass and Juho Kola on drums/percussion.
